Homeless Bird Summary Koly, age thirteen, is to be married to a boy her parents have chosen for her. She has never met him and is anxious about her uncertain future, but she knows her impoverished family will benefit from her leaving. Upon meeting her groom, she discovers that his family has deceived her own. Not only is the young man younger than promised, but also he is gravely ill. In little time, Koly becomes a widow, at the mercy of her new in-laws. Her mother-in-law proves to be a shrewish and demanding task master, causing Koly to work hard to find little moments of joy. After this same woman abandons her in a city of widows of all ages living on charity, Koly must find a way to overcome her hunger and homelessness. Fortunately, she has an artist’s mind, a talent for embroidery, and a knack for making quality friends. This story, set in modern day India, reveals culture and customs unfamiliar to the American teen reader.
